Updated car insurance
I had already notified my car insurance provider (USAA) with my new address, but I wasn't sure if that was enough. So I called them just to make sure, and good thing I did! Updating the policy from Michigan to Ohio cut my premium nearly in half! While I was there, though, I increased a few coverages and lowered my deductible. After that, I'm still saving $30/mo thanks to the giant difference. And while I was still on the phone with the rep, I got an email with the PDF of my new insurance card.

I'm liking Columbus, Ohio. Gas is cheaper, low-end rent is cheaper, auto insurance is cheaper. They have lots of easy-access highways around. Google Street View is complete here (take a look at the Morphicon hotel), which helps with navigation. And best of all, there's lots of friendly folks here.

Yeah, [info]ashark2th and I really liked Columbus the first time we were there for Morphicon, we were both entertaining the idea of moving there (too far from family that lives out on the east coast for me, though). Glad to hear you're settling in nicely :)

The other way to get cheaper auto insurance is to be old. Going from an old car to a new car with no change in anything else raised my 6-month premium by... $48.50.

I remember there being a significant drop in my premium when I finished my 25th orbit around the sun.

You will find that Ohio has many positive attributes as compared to Michigan. Don't get me wrong, Michigan is a great place, but from a financial stand point Ohio is better. From a car insurance stand point, I happen to own a few insurance agencies in 13 states and we find that new clients average a savings of over 39.7%. People moving to Ohio from out of state often save significantly more. The "experts" disagree as to why we are so fortunate- some say the legal climate, others the culture relative to driving and numerous other reasons. But when it's all said and done, we're pretty lucky to have the insurance rate structure that we do. Good luck- J.D. at http://www.ohiocar-insurance.com
